To make matters worse, the city zealously concealed and deceived every effort to expose their illegal activities for more than two decades to present day. This city disposed more than three hundred thousand cubic yards of hazardous waste there. From 1960s through 2000, this city’s illegal trespassed entirely upon private properties of low-income blacks who lived adjacent the notorious all-black Perry Homes Housing Project. This site created by a dominant municipality, whose authoritative power extends throughout the entire Southeastern section of the USA. Imagine, all three levels of government have been and are allowing the ongoing concealment of a deeply massive hazardous illegal dumpsite. If they will do this, how can we the public, trust them with our drinking water? 100% transparency is required! I’ve inscribed these pages after a number of alarming experiences dating back to the mid-1960s through present day. A concealment of any kind by our government to keep secrets of their criminal activities must not be tolerated especially when the government, in this case the municipality of the City of Atlanta trespasses on private properties and illegally dumps for years their hazardous waste.

5/29/2023 0 Comments The best we could do novelThis graphic novel personalizes the multi-generational violent political upheaval of Vietnam that led to the Vietnamese diaspora into the United States.ĭrawn in black with sepia toned ink washes, this graphic novel jumps around gracefully between a timespan of 50 years into the history of Vietnam. Thi Bui’s debut graphic novel memoir, The Best We Can Do, in its firsthand account of her family’s journey from Vietnam into the United States, gives the reader that space to experience the anguish of immigration, first from North Vietnam to the South, then into refugee camps, before finally settling into the United States. As an example, we have frequent conversations on immigration as a policy, but not as commonly do we have conversations about the emotional devastation and trauma that comes with choosing to leave for a new country. Reading books and experiencing the lives of well-developed characters help foster the mental calisthenics for the people you meet day-to-day. Some books need to be written to allow people the ability to safely experience things that they would otherwise might not ever feel or experience. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Mummy dearest joan crawfordTo that tradition we can add Mommie Dearest, Frank Perry’s 1981 biopic of Joan Crawford, which recently passed the 35th anniversary of its release, and of particular interest thanks to its slot at the conclusion of the You Must Remember This podcast’s excellent “Six Degrees of Joan Crawford” summer mini-series. When we last visited the magic land of terrible movies we looked at Valley of the Dolls, a showbiz roman a clef whose characters were clearly inspired by the likes of Marilyn Monroe and (especially) Judy Garland, a film (and novel before it) that ended up influencing the public perception of those stars as much as any of their films. This week, in belated celebration of its 35th anniversary, we take a look at the notorious Joan Crawford biopic/exposé Mommie Dearest. Welcome to “Bad Movie Night,” a biweekly feature in which we sift through the remains of bad movies of all stripes: the obscure and hilarious, the bloated and beautiful, the popular and painful. 5/29/2023 0 Comments The street lawyerThe book opens like so many Hollywood movies, with a bravura setpiece. Michael Brock, Grisham’s first person narrator, arrives at his swanky Washington, D.C., firm’s office for work one morning, tailed by a ragged homeless man. Like any resident of our nation’s capital, Michael is used to the homeless. They’re a nuisance, a daily pain the rich can afford to ignore. Almost bored with the situation, Michael asks for security to take care of the man.īefore that can happen, the man produces a gun and herds the high-priced lawyers into a room. Michael narrates the action, his jurist’s eye sharp when picking up other’s shortcomings and his own. The gunman, who tells them to call him simply Mister, asks them embarrassing questions like how much money they make versus how much they donate to the homeless. The results are damning, Michael agrees. JOHN GRISHAM’S ninth novel, The Street Lawyer, follows the basic formula of his other bestsellers, taking a jaded lawyer disillusioned with the American system of justice and–through a series of dire and not always believable events–leading him back to his original idealism through the true promise of those same institutions. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Vicious lj shen seriesOr who could forget this amazing declaration Now can't you feel how overwhelmed with emotions he is here? Next time I find you anywhere inside my house, bring a body bag because you won’t be leaving alive.” “Wrong fucking place and wrong fucking time. The hero would say and think such wonderful thingsĪbout the heroine that made this truly a romantic delight for all. The storyline might have really worked for me here if the hero had not been such a giant DICK!Īnd this was all in the name of messed up love/hate or whatever the f*ck you call what that was!Ĭlick the spoiler below to find out more. With these characters having grown up together, and now this story which is taking place 10 years later but don't worry we do get flashbacks. Honestly, this book had all the crazy coming out to play. It was very Young adult with physical abuse, verbal abuse, bullying, humiliation, random sexual hookup, and revenge f*cks on ex-boyfriend bed and blackmailing mom and pop and not to mention threatening the very existence of her sick sister. To say I mostly hated this book would be putting it mildly. Well, I will freely admit that I am NOT the intended audience for this one. 5/28/2023 0 Comments Rattlesnake by kim fieldingIt’s cheaper, more convenient, and actually closer to the terminal than long term parking. The day was kind of fraught even before I got to the airport, actually. We sat around the airport all afternoon, until the airline determined it wasn’t going to get fixed tonight. Apparently one of the cabin doors on my plane was damaged, and Lufthansa thinks a tiny little detail like not being able to pressurize the cabin is important. Which meant we would have (Rattle)snakes on a plane!īut we don’t. Instead, I’m in a hotel near San Francisco International, enjoying the lovely view you see at the beginning of the post. I am sitting here stressing about it, kind of like how I felt sending my younger daughter into the wilds of junior high earlier this month.īut right now I should be in an airplane, somewhere between the US and Europe. Some characters strike a special chord in my heart, and Jimmy and Shane are among that select crowd. I’ve told you already–probably repeatedly–that I’m extra excited about this one. You can buy it in print or ebook versions. My thirteenth novel, Rattlesnake, has just released from Dreamspinner Press. As a nurse, Libbie should at least be safe. I’ve probably taken no more than three sick days in all the years I’ve worked here.” “Your job performance isn’t an issue.” “ Is Human Resources about to start layoffs? I’ve heard the hospital fears a financial catastrophe because of all the bad press.” Administrative staff would be the first to get let go. “And this was the first time I’d asked for any time off. “I do a good job,” I continued in a rush. But I couldn’t do that without steady paychecks coming in. I’d planned on apartment hunting the next couple of days, excited about the prospect of at last getting my own place. It’s true I’ve been under a lot of stress lately, but I’m coping.” She did not appear reassured, and I swallowed hard, fighting to hide my nervousness.
